Reporting to Corporate Management on Value of Legal Service
Performing its assigned or assumed work well represents only a portion (albeit a significant portion) of what a corporate law department should endeavor to do. Another important aspect of its role consists of communicating to corporate management how it (i.e., the law department) completes its work.
To a degree, unless management believes that the in-house lawyers are acquitting themselves well in their work, they're not doing so. Their reporting should strive to illuminate the department's deliverables in the same lexicon and format used by corporate management. The department's delivery of value to the enterprise should come through in that reporting.
