Compliance Programs Redefined: Elevating Contractual Responsibilities to Their Proper Place

While compliance programs typically focus on laws and government regulations, the full scope of compliance should also include requirements that reside in voluntary agreements that an organization has entered into with other parties. Those contractual obligations, if not satisfied, can lead to deleterious consequences for the defaulting party that, while not as punitive as those imposed by a government agency, certainly can affect the organization's viability. Accordingly, including those obligations within the range of a compliance program should be high on the priority list of a program.
